Several packages are patched before compilation, but only when the patch is needed to circumvent a problem. This build process is based on <emphasis>cross-compilation</emphasis>. Cross-compilation is normally used to build a compiler and its associated toolchain for a machine different from the one that is used for the build. The <parameter>TERM=$TERM</parameter> construct sets the <envar>TERM</envar> variable inside chroot to the same value as outside chroot. If other variables are desired, such as <envar>CFLAGS</envar> or <envar>CXXFLAGS</envar>, this is a good place to set them.
